Auckland Airport put plans to merge its terminals on hold last year due to Covid-19.
Auckland International Airport says it will start work to merge its domestic operations with its international terminal early next year.
Auckland Airport had advanced design work and signed construction contracts for a new domestic jet hub prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it was one of several major infrastructure projects that were cancelled or deferred at the airport when the pandemic arrived.
Auckland Airport chief executive Adrian Littlewood said New Zealanders wanted a better domestic travel experience at Auckland Airport and that’s what it was focused on delivering.
“The construction of a new domestic facility closely integrated with our international safe travel zone operations will provide a seamless journey between major New Zealand destinations and our global air connections,” Littlewood said.
A new terminal new transport hub with upgraded pedestrian, transport links, and car parking would provide a smooth connection into the terminal building, he said.
