Famed college basketball announcer Dick Vitale announced Monday he was diagnosed with lymphoma, just a few months after a melanoma scare.

As a result, the 82-year-old ESPN announcer will be treated with six months of chemotherapy along with a regiment of steroids, he said in a blog post.

“With all that said, I consider myself very lucky,” Vitale said. “I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that cancer can have on families, on children, and on all of our loved ones. It can bring you to your knees. It’s physically and emotionally exhausting. It robs you of so many things, including life itself for some of the most unfortunate patients. I never lose sight of that, and that’s why I feel so lucky.”

In August, Vitale said skin that was removed from above his nose had tested positive for melanoma. He had surgery in June to have the growth removed and was “thrilled” when he learned the cancer had not spread.

“The bottom line is they removed all cancer cells, and I was relieved, big time, to be cancer clear,” he said at the time.

Vitale’s lymphoma is unrelated to his melanoma. The treatment for his new diagnosis, he said, “is going to be a lot tougher” while noting early detection played an important role.

His lymphoma has a 90% cure rate, Vitale said.

A longtime Bradenton, Florida, resident, Vitale hosts an annual gala for pediatric cancer research. Since its inception in 2006, it has raised approximately $44 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, according to Vitale.

“I will do everything in my power to win this battle,” Vitale said.

Vitale joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season, just after the network’s launch in September 1979. Known for his animated personality, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
