A 69-year-old Auckland man has died following an assault in his Māngere home.

A homicide investigation has been launched after a 69-year-old Auckland man died following an assault on Sunday morning, police confirmed.

The man died in the early hours of Sunday after being assaulted in his home in Māngere east, a police spokeswoman said.

He was critically injured and taken to Middlemore Hospital, and has since died, she said.

A 58-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent in relation to the assault and is due to appear in Manukau District Court today.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid.

Police confirm that nobody else is being sought in relation to the death.
