Rain Wrath Kills 4 In Odisha, Over 20 Lakh Affected: Preliminary Report  


An estimated 111 blocks in 20 districts of Odisha have been affected due to the heavy incessant rains that lashed many parts of the State for over two days. 

As per a preliminary report by the State government, as many as 20,46,122 people belonging to 3696 villages have been hit by the rains and consequent flooding. Similarly, 2870 houses were damaged by the rainwater. A total of 13534 people were evacuated to safer places during the period.    

The government report said that the highest number of 1136971 people was affected due to the rain in Jagatsinghpur district followed by 779241 in Kendrapara, 48457 in Dhenkanal, 21596 in Cuttack and 21525 in Jajpur.

At least four people have so far died during mishaps during the rains in the State, it said.

“As per preliminary report received from districts, four human causalities have been reported, two in Kendrapara district due to wall collapse, one in Khordha district due to drowning and one in Ganjam district due to wall collapse,” an official statement by the government noted.

“Detail investigation is going on by the district administration. One person missing due to drowning in Nischintakoili Block of Cuttack district,” it added.
Earlier in the day, State Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) directed the Collectors of all districts to take immediate measures to make an assessment of damages in the affected areas.

SRC Pradeep Kumar Jena has directed the Collectors to furnish the report within a week (by October 22) mandatorily for distribution of compensation to the people hit by the rain fury.
