It has been a busy weekend for emergency services in Southland with six people reported to have sustained serious injuries from two separate incidents.

At 12.05pm on Saturday emergency services were called to a serious crash on Tokanui-Gorge Rd Highway between Fleming Rd and Chisholm Rd.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash with five people reported to have sustained serious injuries and a rescue helicopter attended.

The road was closed with diversions put in place until Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning a police spokesperson said there were no further details around the circumstances behind the crash as an investigation begins.

Emergency services on Sunday morning attended the scene of a second incident in Anderson Place in East Gore.

A police spokesperson said they were called at 3.20am to attend the single-vehicle incident where the vehicle had crashed into a house.

One person sustained serious injuries and was transported to Southland Hospital in Invercargill by helicopter, the police spokesperson said.

The scene was cleared by 7am.
