An uncommon, spiralling plume of fuel and light-weight throughout the night time sky from Nelson all the best way to Stewart Island has left sky watchers speculating, however consultants says there’s a quite simple clarification.

South Island residents in giant numbers took to social media and tip strains on Sunday night time to report seeing the eye-catching phenomenon.

Amongst them was Alasdair Burns, 34, who runs a star-gazing enterprise on Steward Island. He stated it was by far the strangest factor he’d seen within the night time sky.

However Richard Easther, a physics professor on the College of Auckland, stated spiral was actually the illuminated plume of a rocket.

The spiral appeared within the sky at round 7.20pm, and was shortly posted in star-gazing social media teams.

Māpua native Augustine Matthews, 54, ran onto the deck to look at it together with her husband.

“It appeared like a planet or star. It was only a white dot with a tiny spiral. And inside 10 minutes it had traversed half the sky and the spiral had grown thrice in measurement,” she stated.

Matthews stated was it “actually lovely” to look at it transfer throughout the sky.

“It wasn’t blinking or twinkling, and it was transferring pretty quick… so fascinating,” she stated.

Based on Easther, it’s believable the rocket was House X’s International Star Mission, which launched earlier on Sunday and handed over New Zealand.
